Shutdown greets Omar in Tral, PDP shooed away at Nishat
Srinagar: While the weather plays spoilsport, the ruling National Conference continues to face hostility in parts of South Kashmir during the party’s campaign tours even by top leaders including Farooq Abdullah and National Conference. Elsewhere the opposition PDP too is facing resentment by people.
People in Tral town observed complete shutdown to protest the visit by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah who was there to campaign for party candidate and his father Farooq Abdullah, newsgathering agency CNS reported Friday. Meanwhile, according to agencies, in Brein Nishat unidentified persons threw stones at the vehicles of Peoples Democratic Party, damaging windowpanes.
Tough security arrangements were put in place as the chief minister visited Tral. Reports said Police and CRPF personnel were deployed on roads and search operations were launched in different areas including Asthanmohalla, Lurgam, Aarigam and Lalgam.
However people observed complete shutdown and all the shops and business establishments remained closed while transport was off the road. Omar was supposed to address a rally at Bajwani village but due to inclement weather the venue was shifted to Town Hall Tral where according to CNS a thin crowd was present.
Meanwhile unknown persons threw rocks on vehicles that belonged to PDP supporters who were part of Tariq Hamid Karra’s campaign.
Quoting eyewitnesses the agency reports said the PDP had organized a road show at Nishat and its surrounding areas. PDP candidate for Parliament Tariq Hamid Kara and District President Muhammad Ashraf Mir addressed people. Reports said that as Karra was busy addressing people outside Jamia Masjid Brein, some unknown people started pelting stones on the PDP supporters who ran for cover. Amid chaos, various PDP vehicles suffered damages and the leaders and supporters retreated from the place without offering any resistance.
Pertinently, the separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani while riding the hate wave against both NC and PDP has praised people for protesting against the mainstream politicians, who he has called “criminals of nation”.
