Reports: Liverpool planning a shock swoop for Cesc Fabregas

The Spaniard looks set to move to greener pastures come the summer transfer window

What’s the story

Cesc Fabregas has emerged as a surprise transfer target for Liverpool. Daily Star reports that the Merseyside club are planning to bring in a midfield general this summer and Fabregas’s name has popped up all of a sudden.

Reportedly, Chelsea are ready to let the former World Cup winner leave should any club offer them at least £30 million. However, Liverpool Echo have claimed that officials at Anfield have ‘rubbished’ the reports linking Fabregas with the club.

In case you didn’t know...

Fabregas returned to England in 2014 after spending three years with his boyhood club Barcelona, where, though he won a lot of silverware, wasn’t very impressive. His first season back in England saw him winning the Premier League with Jose Mourinho-led Chelsea.

However, the next season was a disaster for the London-based club, which saw them finish tenth on the points table following the sacking of Portuguese. Since then Fabregas has found himself on the bench more often than not and N’Golo Kante’s inclusion hasn’t helped his case as well.

Therefore, the Spaniard looks set to move to greener pastures come the summer transfer window.

The heart of the matter

Liverpool are preparing themselves for the next season which would see them return to European competitions and they dearly need to improve their squad depth. Because they don’t have a transfer chest as big as Manchester United’s or for that matter even Arsenal’s, they will be looking to rope in cheap yet effective players.

Chelsea, on the other hand, return to the Champions League after a year-long hiatus themselves and would love to hold on to the core of the squad.

However, Fabregas, who has just played 1,047 minutes in the Premier League this season is not an important part of Antonio Conte’s plans and should a club comes in with a suitable bid, they wouldn’t be reluctant to let him go.

Fabregas, however, is a rather surprising name to be linked with the Merseyside club as he is not the kind of player that even Jurgen Klopp would prefer in his team.

What’s Next

All the three parties in question here, Liverpool, Chelsea and Fabregas, would like to finish the season on a high before taking a plunge into the world of transfers.

Author’s Take

While Chelsea won’t be hesitant to let Fabregas go should the right bid come in, selling a player as accomplished as him to a direct rival would be blasphemy, to say the least. For Fabregas, on the other hand, at the age of 29, a league like Serie A would be perfect to ply his trade in.
