As the news of Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen president Asaduddin Owaisi's arrest spread, tension gripped parts of Hyderabad city. At many places, MIM supporters also forcibly imposed a bandh. The police have tightened the security and intensified patrolling in sensitive areas.

Asaduddin was on Monday remanded to 14 days judicial custody by a court in Medak district.

Owaisi, who is a Lok Sabha member form Hyderabad had appeared in the court of Sangareddy town in connection with a 2005 case of demonstration against demolition of a mosque for road widening by the local administration.

The judge remanded Asaduddin to judicial custody Until February 2 and posted the hearing of his bail petition for Tuesday.

It may be recalled here that a roadside mosque at Muttangi town in Medak district was demolished by the administration to make way for the road widening work, sparking a massive protest led by Asaduddin.

While the protests forced the government to rebuild the mosque at the same place, the police booked a case against Asaduddin Owaisi, his younger brother and Member of Legislative Assembly Akbaruddin Owaisi and several others. Charges of assault on and obstructing officials from discharging their duties were slapped against Asaduddin Owaisi.

Forty-two-year old Asaduddin has been sent to jail at a time when his younger brother was already serving 14 days judicial remand in the Adilabad district jail in connection with a hate speech case.

A non-bailabale warrant against the brothers was issued four years ago, but none of them had appeared before the court so far.

Last week, the police had brought Akbaruddin from the Adilabad jail to Sangareddy. The court had directed the police to bring Asaduddin to the court.
