SsangYong Rexton recalled in India due to a powertrain issue

Mahindra has recalled an undisclosed number of SsangYong Rexton flagship SUVs in India to fix a powertrain issue. The recall covers even vehicles that were manufactured before 2014.

The company says that the defect could lead to loss of torque in the Rexton’s rear drive shaft. The issue will be inspected and fixed free of cost. Mahindra says that the move complies with SIAM’s voluntary code on vehicle recall.

The Rexton has been on sale in India since 2012.

The automaker will call all the concerned owners to fix an appointment. A proactive repair work is being assured.

The Rexton is being sold in India through select Mahindra outlets since October 2012. The ladder frame SUV which is based on the old Mercedes ML Class (now renamed as GLE) is being assembled at Mahindra’s Chakan plate out of CKD kits.

The next gen Rexton will be based on an all-new ladder frame SUV.

The Rexton is powered by a 2.7-litre diesel engine which is sourced from Mercedes. The motor is available in two states of tune – 162 PS and 184 PS.

The Toyota Fortuner rival is priced between INR 21 – 25 lakhs (ex-showroom, New Delhi). It started off strongly but its popularity waned over the years due to its age.

SsangYong is gearing up to world premiere the next gen Rexton at Paris Motor Show in October. The new SUV is based on an all-new ladder frame chassis and it will feature completely new design inside out. We expect the new model to land in India next year.
