Improvement in consistency after Gopichand split is evident, says Saina Nehwal

New Delhi: Ace Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal, who won the Indian Open title on Sunday beating former world champion Thailand's Ratchanok Intanon praised her current coach Vimal Kumar for her consistent performances.

In an exclusive chat with Rakesh Saran of Zee Media, the World No. 1 said she was now looking forward to put a good show at the Malaysian Open.

How tough was the Indian Open tournament?

It was very tough. Especially to win a title in ones own country is always tough. I had been struggling in the tournament for last four years, but finally I won the title. Now I am also the World No. 1 so I am very happy.

Do you think you are at your peak at the moment and how do you see Rio Olympics from here onwards?

I am not thinking about Rio Olympics at the moment as it's quite far. There are many more tournaments before that where I have to perform well. Malaysian Open is next and my target is to do well there.

If you compare your previous coach Pullela Gopichard with your current coach Vimal Kumar, what difference do you see in their coaching techniques as there has been a big difference in results ever since you started training under Vimal?

I think the difference is there for all to see. Under Gopi Sir, there was a certain improvement in my game. I personally believe, I am a player who can deliver consistent performances, who can consistently play the finals. Thus I needed someone who could devote a lot of time for me and Vimal Sir gave me a lot of his time. It is because of that that I have been able to be so consistent with my performances.

You received wishes from Sachin Tendulkar, Amitabh Bachchan, Prime Minister after you became the World No. 1. How do you get motivated?

Yes there wishes mean a lot. It's good to see people praising you commitment towards the country. I hope I can continue playing like this and win more medals for the country.
