Rio de Janeiro: Canoeist David Cal, Spain's most successful Olympian, has announced his retirement.
Spain's Olympic committee president Alejandro Blanco praised the winner of one gold and four silver Olympics medals.
"We should protect and give thanks to David Cal, there are few like him," Blanco said on Wednesday.
Cal had reunited with his coach Jesus Morlan in December, training with Brazilian Olympic hopefuls in a bid to shed excess weight and revive his career.
