Sao Paulo: Jenson Button is "ready to pounce" and fight for a podium finish in Sunday`s Brazilian Grand Prix after qualifying fifth for McLaren on Saturday.

The 34-year-old Briton, without a confirmed seat or team in Formula One next year, said he was delighted with fifth.

"The aim is obviously to keep the pack behind me and I think you`ve got to try and stay as close to the cars in front, in case there`s a bit of action -- there always can be here between team-mates," said the former world champion.

"I think that the Williams could be quick in the race as well, so it could mix it up in front, and we want to be ready to pounce if something happens."

Button and McLaren`s last win was in Brazil two years ago when, in wet conditions, he took the lead after Nico Hulkenberg, then at Force India, collided with his then team-mate Lewis Hamilton.

On Saturday, world championship leader Hamilton was second behind Mercedes team-mate German Nico Rosberg in qualifying.
