WATCH: How Lionel Messi missed crucial penalty kick in Copa America final against Chile

New Delhi: Widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers ever, Argentina's Lionel Messi disappointed his fans by missing out on a penalty kick in the Copa America final vs Argentina.

Messi, who has never won a major trophy for Argentina, once again failed to end his country's trophy drought in major finals.

After Argentina goalkeeper Sergio Romero saved Arturo Vidal's first shot of the penalty shootout, Argentine fans erupted with joy.

Messi stepped up to take the first shot. He struck the ball with his left foot, but it sailed it well over the crossbar.

It was the first time Messi had missed in a penalty shootout during his career, according to the game broadcast.

Earlier, midfielder Vidal also missed out in converting the first shot of the penalty shootout for his team.
