FA `delighted` by Euro 2020 final in London

London: England`s top football chief Greg Dyke relished the chance to host the final of the European football championship in 2020, when the tournament returns to the British Isles for the first time since 1996. 

"We`re obviouly delighted. I want to thank everyone, it`s nice to win one," he said, thanking the British government and the city of London for supporting the winning bid.

England hosted the European football championship once in 1996, but the tournament six years from now will be held in a completely new Wembley stadium.

"Wembley is a great stadium and we`re delighted to be holding the finals of this tournament. You have to go back to 1996, and Wembley has been completely rebuilt since then, it`s now a beautiful stadium," Dyke said. 

He also praised the novel format of Euro 2020, which will see all 51 games hosted in 13 countries across Europe. 

"What a good idea this is, when you watch all these capital cities across Europe... What a good idea to play a tourmament across Europe," the FA boss. 

The experiment, the brainchild of UEFA boss Michel Platini, is meant as a "Euro for Europe" on the 60th anniversary of the tournament, which kicked off in 1960. 

Aside from London, the host cities for Euro 2020 are: Munich (Germany), Baku (Azerbaijan), Saint Petersburg (Russia), Rome (Italy), Copenhagen (Denmark), Bucharest (Romania), Amsterdam (Netherlands), Dublin (Ireland), Bilbao (Spain), Budapest (Hungary), Brussels (Belgium) and Glasgow (Scotland).
