Zaheer Abbas wants Waqar Younis to step down as Pakistan head coach

Karachi: Batting great Zaheer Abbas on Sunday joined the chorus of former cricketers who have demanded the stepping down of head coach Waqar Younis after the humiliating defeats of the national team in Bangladesh in the ODIs and T20 International matches.

"There is no doubt that Waqar was a great cricketer but as a coach he has failed to deliver the goods and he should be replaced," Abbas said.

Abbas, who was known as the Asian Bradman for his run-scoring feats, himself was last year attached with the national team as consultant but he was asked to step down after Pakistan's failure to qualify for the World T20 semifinals in Bangladesh.

"I have never seen since a spineless performance from the national team in my life. Losing is part of life but the way we played it just did not appear this was the Pakistan team playing against Bangladesh," he said.

"There are no excuses for the way we have been defeated in Bangladesh. It is very sad for Pakistan cricket. I never imagined our players will perform so badly," Abbas, a former captain, added.

Pakistan suffered a humiliating 0-3 whitewash in the ODI series and also lost the lone T20 International also.

Abbas further stated that not only did the Board need to make changes in the team management, including the head coach, but there was also the need to change the thinking of the players.

Abbas said he and many other former players were willing to offer their services to the Board.
