Indian Premier League 9: More trouble for Rising Pune Supergiants as in-form Steve Smith flies back home due to wrist injury

New Delhi: There seems to be no end to Rising Pune Supergiants' woes in the ninth edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2016.

While the team has been struggling to win matches on the field, several of their reputed cricketers have been forced to leave the tournament midway due to injuries.

Australian batsman Steve Smith was the latest one to join the list when he was ruled out of the remaining season with a wrist injury.

"Steve has been struggling with pain in his right wrist for the last week during his stint in the IPL," Australia's sports science and sports medicine manager Alex Kountouris was quoted as saying by ESPN cricinfo. "We have been working with his IPL franchise Pune to monitor this, and unfortunately it has not resolved. As such, he will return home from India for further assessment and treatment ahead of the tour of the West Indies.

The Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led team had earlier lost Kevin Pietersen, Faf du Plessis and Mitchell Marsh to injuries.

Smith's injury has come as a huge blow for RPS, considering the flamboyant right-hander was in fine nick after hitting a brilliant ton against Gujarat Lions.

RPS are currently languishing at the sixth position in the points tally.
