New Delhi: South African opener Hashim Amla on Wednesday became the fastest cricketer to score 17 ODI centuries. Amla achieved the feat in 98 innings, which is 14 less than previous record holder Virat Kohli.

Amla scored his 17th ODI ton against Australia in the third ODI played at Manuka Oval in Canberra, but despite his valiant effort, the Proteas lost the match by 83 runs.

Earlier, the 31-year-old became the fastest to score 15 ODI hundreds as well when he hit a century against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo, once again surpassing Kohli's record. Amla achieved that feat in 86 innings while the Delhi batsman took 20 more innings to get to the mark.

Amla has become an integral part of the South African ODI team ever since he made his debut in 2008.

Kohli might be on his way to score the most number of ODI centuries, but when it comes to scoring them in less number of innings, he for sure is getting a tough fight from the Proteas opener.
