CLT20 2014: Kane Williamson hits maiden ton of sixth edition

New Delhi: Third match of the Champions League Twenty20 witnessed the maiden ton of the sixth edition, which came from the bat of Northern Districts' opener Kane Williamson.

When South African outfit Cape Cobras won the toss and invited New Zealand club to bat first, both the openers -- Anton Devcich and Williamson – laid a good foundation by stitching a 140-run partnership for the opening wicket in 13.4 overs.

Williamson started playing big shots from the word go and completed his half-century in mere 25 balls with the help of four boundaries and two sixes.

After a flying start, Devcich got run-out after scoring 67 runs off 46 balls. But Williamson kept scoring boundaries from one end, even after losing two partners in quick succession.

After the end of the penultimate over of Districts' innings, the right-hander was on 91, and chances of him scoring a hundred were looking bleak. But it was his day, as after scoring three runs off the first three balls, Williamson smacked Vernon Philander for a six over covers off a free-hit, to complete his hundred. He played a blistering unbeaten knock of 101 runs, laced with eight boundaries and five sixes, in his 49-ball innings.

The opener played a flawless innings, with class written all over it. He proved once again that he can play in all formats of the game with equal ease.

Riding on his swashbuckling knock, Northern Districts managed to put up a mammoth total of 206 runs. And when the Cobra's came to chase the total, rain stopped the play after 7.2 overs when the score was 44 for two. Eventually, due to heavy rain match result was decided by D/L method, according to which the New Zealand base franchise sealed the match by 33 runs.
