Brendon McCullum - Key witness to Cairns perjury trial?

New Delhi: New Zealand skipper Brendon McCullum may be a potential witness in the Chris Cairns perjury trial, according to reports. He was involved in a legal row to keep confidential material out of the public domain.

The perjury charge stems from Cairns' successful defamation case against the the former boss of Indian Premier League (IPL) Lalit Modi in 2012 over allegations of match-fixing.

The comments arrived after McCullum swore an affidavit about his former professional relationship with mental skills coach Kerry Schwalger.

Earlier, a High Court injunction had advised to stop a Sunday newspaper from publishing confidential information involving the pair.

According to New Zealand Herald, McCullum has expressed his resolve to give evidence on the match-fixing, which carries the name of former Kiwi all-rounder Cairns.

On September 12, Cairns confirmed that he will be formally charged of perjury in London on September 25. He also said that he was "extremely disappointed" and that he would be flying to the UK to clear his name "once and for all".

Garth Gallaway, McCullum's lawyer, said that “Brendon remains unwavering in his desire to see the game be rid of match fixing.”

"His resolve to give evidence, if he is required to do so, in relation to the match fixing approaches made to him is stronger than ever," added Gallaway.

In his statement to the International Cricket Council's anti-corruption unit, McCullum claimed that he was approached by a former top player to fix matches. The player was dubbed "Player X" in the statement.

Since then, Cairns has conceded that the “Player X” was indeed him, but he has repeatedly denied match-fixing and described the allegations as "despicable lies".

Cairns` former team-mate, Lou Vincent, who was banned for life earlier this year, also alleged that the same "Player X" lured him into a murky world of corruption that included offers of cash and sex to rig matches.

McCullum is currently in India, representing Chennai-based franchise Chennai Super Kings in the 2014 T20 Champions League tournament.
