Blast from the past: When Don Bradman inquired about Sunil Gavaskar, the best who can save Test matches

New Delhi: Sunil Gavaskar's batting brilliance is second to none. Memories of him saving Test matches for India continue to inspire generations after generations. And his exploits have already become stuff legends are made of.

In a previously unheard of stories, former Mumbai batsman Shishir Hattangadi shared that legendary Don Bradman once hailed Gavaskar as an opener, "who can save you Test matches".

Speaking at the 67th birthday of the legendary opener at the Cricket Club of India on Sunday night, Hattangadi remebered Bradman saying, "I like to see him play. I haven't seen an opening batsman over the years, who can save you Test matches, because it takes one decision or an indecision to get out. And he's being able to do it with a great amount of success."

Hattangadi, who opened with Gavaskar for MCI, had a chance meeting with the Australian legend during a tour Down Under with the CCI team in 1985.

"Obviously we came back feeling proud as Indians, that the great Bradman was so complimentary about 'our' Gavaskar. And people who know Bradman, know that he wasn't liberal with his praises. He was a hard man to please," Hattangadi added.
