NASA says colors are enhanced in the cutout of a pit exposing reddish layers.

New Delhi: Scientists have revealed that much of Mars' surface is covered by fine-grained materials that hide the bedrock.

 

However, elsewhere the bedrock on the Martian surface is well exposed - such as in this scene where the exposed bedrock reveals reddish layers situated next to dark dunes. Check out the image below.

The image was obtained by the HiRISE camera onboard the NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO).
