Kuala Lumpur: Two Iraqi nationals, suspected to be members of the dreaded Islamic State terror group, have been arrested here for allegedly making death threats to the Ambassadors of Saudi Arabia and Qatar in Malaysia.
The two men, aged 39 and 42, were detained from Jalan Ampang here on Thursday.
Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar said the suspects had entered the country illegally and were?being detained for further investigation.
"Preliminary investigations have revealed they could have been sent by (Islamic State) IS to do something here, which can pose a threat to the country," he told reporters.
Khalid also urged all quarters to be the "eyes and ears" of the police and to pass on information on IS-linked activities, including attempting to recruit youths and local citizens to be sent to Syria and Iraq.
"I reiterate here that the plan of the IS is real... If we are not careful, something untoward will happen," he warned.
A local paper Berita Harian reported that the Saudi Arabian and Qatar ambassadors had received death threats from unknown sources, believed to be from Iraq.
The threats to Qatari and Saudi Arabian ambassadors here were given to a special officer working in the Qatar embassy in Jalan Ampang Hilir, by an Iraqi man, two days ago.
The Iraqi man had claimed to be working with an Iraqi intelligence unit here.
Muslim-majority Malaysia, which practice a moderate form of Islam, has seen many of its youths leaving for Iraq and Syria, to fight alongside the IS militants who have captured large swathes of land in these countries.
Earlier this month, Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said that 61 Malaysians had been identified by police in Syria and Iraq for fighting for IS militants and that 10 of them have been killed.
