Congress leaders on Wednesday met West Bengal Governor KN Tripathi and demanded a CBI probe into the killing of the party's student wing leader at Sabang area of West Midnapore last month.

Kolkata: Congress leaders on Wednesday met West Bengal Governor KN Tripathi and demanded a CBI probe into the killing of the party's student wing leader at Sabang area of West Midnapore last month.

"We have demanded a CBI inquiry into the killing of Chatra Parishad leader Krishnapada Jana. We have told the Governor about the district police's inaction and how they are trying to save leaders of Trinamool Chatra Parishad involved in the crime," senior state Congress leader Abdul Manan told a news agency.

The Congress delegation was led by senior Congress leaders Somen Mitra and Gyan Singh Sohanpal.

Manan said the Governor gave a patient hearing to the delegation.

"We have also informed him about the lawless situation in the state," Manan said.

Jana was allegedly beaten to death in a clash between student unions over felicitation of state minister Soumen Kumar Mahapatra inside a college at Sabang in West Midnapore district. He was a BA (III Year) student of Sajanikanta Mahavidyalaya.

Congress had last week called a 12-hour strike to protest against the killing.
