New Delhi: Two persons have been held in connection with the gang-rape of septuagenarian nun in West Bengal's Nadia district, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Meenakshi Lekhi tweeted on Sunday.

In her post on the micro-blogging site Twitter, Lekhi said, "#NunRape Md. Majid & Mukul Alam arrested in connection with the Ranaghat nun-rape case."

The Mamata Banerjee government had been slammed from all corners for failing to arrest the accused in the gang-rape of the nun who was a part of the Convent of Jesus and Mary School in Nadia.

A team of National Commission for Women (NCW) had on Saturday visited the school and investigated the case.

"We are concerned as there is no arrest. There is footage available, so they should have been arrested. We will talk to the police," NCW member Shamina Shafiq said.

17 people had been detained, but none had been arrested in connection with the March 14 incident.

CCTVs installed in the school captured photos of the accused.

The nun, who was the Sister Superior of the convent school, was discharged from hospital in the wee hours of Friday and she left for an undisclosed destination.

The state government had initially ordered a CID probe but decided to hand over the case to CBI as the accused persons were suspected to have fled to Bangladesh.

The incident caused massive uproar with religious organisations from all corners of the country demanding better security for places of worship.
