No farmer death in Burdwan district due to distress sale of potatoes: DM

The state administration on Saturday said that contrary to media reports, an official inquiry has found no farmer suicide in Burdwan district due to distress sale of potatoes or for failing to repay the loan.

Burdwan: The state administration on Saturday said that contrary to media reports, an official inquiry has found no farmer suicide in Burdwan district due to distress sale of potatoes or for failing to repay the loan.

"A report filed by Additional District Magistrate (Panchayat) R Ray based on the inquiry by local Block Development Officer (BDO), Assistant Director of Agriculture and local police said that none of the seven alleged farmer suicides have any connection with distressed sale of potato or loan taken to farm potatoes", District Magistrate Saumitra Mohan told PTI.

The report filed by the ADM (Panchayat) said that Mansul Sk of Ausgram II Block had died on March 17 due to "electric shock" while connecting his submersible pump in his agricultural field while six others had committed suicide due to family or other reasons.

Relatives of the deceased farmers had claimed that they had committed suicide for not being able to repay debts as their products did not find adequate takers.
