Congress leader demands domicile quota in law varsity in Raj

City domicile-based quota for students in ten out of the fourteen national law universities in the country, a senior Congress leader on Monday demanded a similar reservation in the Jodhpur-based National Law University from the next academic session.

Jaipur: City domicile-based quota for students in ten out of the fourteen national law universities in the country, a senior Congress leader on Monday demanded a similar reservation in the Jodhpur-based National Law University from the next academic session.

In a letter written yesterday to Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje, a senior executive member of RPCC and former MLA, Sanyam Lodha said that out of 14 law universities in the country, 10 have the provision of domicile-based reservation, i.e., reservation for the candidates of the state where the university is situated.

After clearing in the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) being conducted every year for admissions for the 14 National Law Universities all over India, NLU at Jodhpur does not have a single reservation of domicile students, Lodha said.

NLU in Raipur, RMLNLU in Lucknow have got domicile reservation of 80 seats each, followed by CNLU in Patna with 60, NLU in Bhopal 51, NUSRL in Ranchi 50 seats, and Jodhpur-based NLW has none, he said, quoting official figures.

Rajasthan's NLU got a total of 115 seats. The next academic session is from 2015-16.

"This is unfair to meritorious candidates of Rajasthan as not only do they lose seats of other universities to those with lower ranks (as other universities have reservation for candidates of their state) but also they do not get any preference in the university of their state", Lodha said.

"It is pertinent to note that the Supreme Court of India in various judgements has held in favour of domicile/state residence-based reservation and the same has been the established practice across the country while demarcating reservation in colleges of higher learning, specially at the undergraduate level", he elaborated.

Lodha urged Raje to take an early decision on this matter so that new candidates going to appear in CLAT in May 2015 might benefit from it.
