Blow to BSP as SC Mishra`s cousin joins BJP
Bahujan Samaj Party`s Brahmin outreach in Uttar Pradesh faced a serious jolt after Dr Divya Mishra, cousin of Mayawati`s close confidant Satish Chandra Mishra, joined the Bhartiya Janata Party.

New Delhi: Bahujan Samaj Party`s Brahmin outreach in Uttar Pradesh faced a serious jolt after Dr Divya Mishra, cousin of Mayawati`s close confidant Satish Chandra Mishra, joined the Bhartiya Janata Party.
Dr Divya Mishra was known to be very close to SC Mishra and enjoyed his trust. Her sudden exit from the BSP may seriously harm Mishra`s claim and position within the BSP as its most credible Brahmin face.
When the BSP came to power in 2007, Dr Divya was appointed as Chairman of State Social Welfare Board and was a key cog in the BSP`s plan to re-emerge as powerful force in Uttar Pradesh after the shocking Lok Sabha poll defeat when the party failed to win even one of the 80 seats from the state. Brahmin`s have been a key part of Mayawati`s social engineering mantra to retain her base in the state. She had wooed them aggressively in all the polls since 2007 when their support ensured a big win for her.
However, a resurgent BJP had eaten away at her support base, especially Brahimins, who voted overwhelmingly in favour of Modi`s promise of `Acche Din`.
The BJP, under Amit Shah, would be hoping to match its performance in Lok Sabha polls, when assembly elections are held next in UP. With party leaders indicating that many other BSP and Samajwadi Party (SP) leaders in touch with them, UP politics appears headed for a big churning.
