Mumbai: Maharashtra Governor K Sankaranarayanan, who had been transferred to Mizoram for his remaining tenure, resigned on Sunday saying that it was not possible for him to go to a new state. He also said that as a governor he had `never played politics` and that he would `return to active politics`. “I sent my resignation to the President today. I want to send my good wishes to Maharashtrians,” he said addressing a press conference and added, “I resigned because I don`t want to continue as a governor. It is not possible for me to go to Mizoram.” Asked whether the move is part of political vendetta, he said, "That is up to you people to comment about it. Our press people are so shrewd, so capable, so intelligent." At the same time he maintained, “From tomorrow I am a free citizen, I can speak what I want and criticise.” Meanwhile, Gujarat Governor OP Kohli has been asked to discharge duty as Maharashtra Governor for the time being. The post of Mizoram Governor had fallen vacant after the sacking of Kamla Beniwal, who had some run-in with the then Chief Minister Narendra Modi when she was the Governor of Gujarat. Sankaranarayanan, 82, was among the Governors, appointed by the UPA, who were earlier asked to resign by the BJP-led NDA government. But, he had refused to do so. His tenure was slated to end in 2017. A senior Congress leader, Sankaranarayanan had been serving as Governor of Maharashtra since 22 January, 2010. He took oath as Governor of Maharashtra for a second time on May 7, 2012 after the President granted him a fresh term of five years. With Agency inputs
