The Maharashtra cabinet on Thursday approved inclusion of ten sub-castes in the 'Lingayat' community in the OBC category and also recommended the Centre to grant minority status to the community.

Mumbai: The Maharashtra cabinet on Thursday approved inclusion of ten sub-castes in the 'Lingayat' community in the OBC category and also recommended the Centre to grant minority status to the community.

Similarly, a go-ahead was also given for setting up of the Transgender Welfare Board which will undertake programmes for the survey of the transgender population and also take up employment and welfare schemes for the community.

Officials said the cabinet had accepted the report of the cabinet sub-committee set up to study the demands of the Lingayat community.

The report of the State OBC commission was also accepted, officials said.

The cabinet also decided to hike pension of freedom fighters by Rs 2,000 and the amount will be deposited in their bank accounts at the start of the financial year.

Re-survey of land records will be done through satellite in Pune, Nashik, Aurangabad, Amravati, Nagpur and Raigad districts in the first phase, officials informed.

Meanwhile, 94 per cent sowing has been completed and there is 64 per cent water in reservoirs.
