Stop addressing children, focus on Parliament: BJP to Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Meenakshi Lekhi on Friday said Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi should have raised the FTII row in Parliament instead of addressing the children of the institution.

"First of all, I would like to call the students whom Rahul Gandhi met as children. They are youngsters as compared to us. We should first try to know how serious they (Congress) are towards the parliamentary proceedings. The Home Minister was giving his statement on the sensitive issue of terrorism and the members of the Congress Party were disrupting the proceedings in an undemocratic manner," Lekhi told ANI.

"Those, who are aware of the democratic principles, must be aware that debate, discussion and dissent are parts of a democracy. If they wanted, they could have tried to have discussion over FTII in Parliament," she added while asserting that the Congress has the experience of more than 60 years," she added.

Gandhi, who interacted with the FTII students in Pune earlier, alleged that the NDA regime is trying to undermine the institution.

The Congress vice-president, who was greeted by strong BJP protests outside the FTII campus, asked the students, "Why do you think the government is so disturbed by your protests?"

The students replied: "There is a lack of knowledge in the people governing us."

Gandhi also asked them as to why was the government upsetting their peace of mind.

A student said, "This is not just about FTII. It is happening in a lot of higher education and cultural institutions."

Gandhi, who was dressed casually in a T-shirt and jeans, also used the occasion to target the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

"If the student body doesn`t want you (Gajendra Chauhan), then you clearly should not be there. The RSS, its wings and their ideology are consistently promoting mediocre people. I have seen this everywhere," he said.
