Shayara Bano case: AIMPLB gets six weeks time to decide on triple talaq

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has given six weeks time to the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) to clarify its stand on issues such as triple talaq.

The apex court passed the ruling while responding to a plea filed by Shayara Bano from Uttarakhand in which the lady has appealed to it to declare triple talaq unconstitutional.

Speaking to ANI, the petitioner Bano said, ''the SC has given 6 weeks time to All India Muslim Personal Law Board to take a decision. I am confident that I'll get justice from SC.''

Talking about the hardship she had faced after her husband gave her triple talaq, Bano said, ''I have approached the highest court with an appeal that triple talaq be declared unconstitutional so that coming generations of Muslim women aren't exploited like me.''

Bano further alleged that she was made to undergo as many as six abortions by her husband who forcibly administered her pills which ruined her health.

The mother of two further said that she longed to be with her children who are still with her husband.

Shayara Bano had catapulted into national headlines after she moved the Supreme Court questioning the legality of triple talaq.

The 37-year-old post graduate in sociology from Kashipur in Udham Singh Nagar district was "justice and move on'' with her life.

However, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board had decided to oppose any move to scrap triple talaq and contest the Shayara Bano case that has called it unconstitutional in the Supreme Court.

"The SC has accepted the board as a party in the case. Now, the board will seek a similar intervention in the Shayara Bano case," lawyer Zafaryab Jilani had said earlier.
