Rashid Alvi criticizes Jaitley's remarks on CAG

Congress leader Rashid Alvi on Wednesday said Finance Minister Arun Jaitley should not make fun of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG), which is a constitutional authority.

New Delhi: Congress leader Rashid Alvi on Wednesday said Finance Minister Arun Jaitley should not make fun of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG), which is a constitutional authority.

Commenting on the Finance Minister's statement in which he had asked the CAG not to sensationalise its findings to get into headlines

"Jaitley ji should recall what he used to say whenever we used to say something about CAG during the UPA regime. CAG is a constitutional authority, let them do their work and don't make fun of them. Being a finance minister, you shouldn't doubt the integrity of CAG," Alvi told ANI here while commenting on the Finance Minister's statement that the CAG should not use its discretionary power in an adversarial manner and auditors should be rational while reviewing the projects.

Communist Party of India (CPI) leader Atul Anjan also echoed similar sentiments on the issue.

"When the Congress used to debate the issues pertaining CAG, Arun Jaitley then used to say that the CAG is a constitutional institution and used to blame the Congress for disgracing the CAG by questioning it. And today he is warning the same CAG," he said.

Addressing the valedictory session of 27th conference of accountants generals, Jaitley earlier today said that CAG should not work in a way to make it to the headline through their audit reports.

He also asked the CAG not to use their discretionary power in an adversarial manner and auditors should be rational while reviewing the projects.
