New Delhi/Itarsi: Putting an end to the inconvenience faced by lakhs of passengers due to cancellation of trains, the Indian Railways, Tuesday, commenced normal operations at the Route Relay Interlinking (RRI) cabin in Itarsi.

A fire had broken out at the RRI cabin on June 17, sparking off one of the biggest crisis faced by the railways in recent years. Being centrally located, Itarsi plays host to trains to all corners of the country.

The first train to be operated today the control of the RRI system was the train number 11016 Kushinagar Express from Gorakhpur to Lokmanya Tilak Terminus, Mumbai.

The month-long blockade led to cancellation of over 3,200 trains, resulting in 50,000 ticket refunds per day.

The RRI system is an electronic mechanism comprising points and signals that allows trains to operate in real time and the knocking out of the RRI means trains are being piloted and cleared from Itarsi junction in a manual way- with flags etc- used almost half a century ago, said Railway officials.
