Land Acquisition Bill: PM Narendra Modi to hold high-level meeting today

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday to discuss the Land Acquisition Ordinance that will lapse on April 5.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday to discuss the Land Acquisition Ordinance that will lapse on April 5.

The meeting, scheduled to be held at around 6:30 pm, is likely to be attended by Cabinet ministers.

With opposition parties refusing to pass the amendments made in the Land Bill, the BJP is likely to deliberate on the next step in today's meeting.

At least 14 opposition parties, led by Congress president Sonia Gandhi, had led a march from Parliament to Rashtrapati Bhavan on March 17 protesting against the “anti-farmer” bills.

Union Minister Birender Singh had said last week that the government is likely to make another effort for a consensus on the land bill and may issue a "re-ordinance".

The government had promulgated the ordinance on land acquisition on December 31 last year. A bill to replace the ordinance was brought to Parliament in Budget Session which started on February 23.

While the bill, providing for amending the Act of 2013, was cleared by the Lok Sabha earlier this month, it got stuck in Rajya Sabha with the entire opposition uniting against it in the House where the ruling NDA is in a minority.

Since then the Budget Session has gone into recess till April 20.
