New Delhi: Delhi government on Thursday sought Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu's intervention in halting a demolition drive in colonies falling around railway tracks in the national capital.
According to the government, Railways are carrying out the drive around the railway tracks across 18 Assembly constituencies in the city.
Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia today met Prabhu at the Rail Bhawan here and requested him to halt the drive being carried out around the tracks in these constituencies.
In the meeting, Sisodia said that if the state government gets some time to solve the problem by developing alternate settlement for the residents of these jhuggis, it would benefit the poor people residing in these areas.
The Railway Minister has assured that the demolition drive would be put on hold for the time being, the government said in a statement.
"In the meeting, Prabhu understood the situation and told the Deputy CM that it should be treated as a joint problem and a solution should be worked out together after setting up a timeline," the government also said.
Delhi government is hopeful that the drive would stop until a solution is worked out. The state government will work with the railways to chalk out a plan to resettle the residents of these jhuggis.
"Officials of the Delhi government have been asked to work with their counterparts in the Railways to work things out," a senior government official said.
