When wild elephants wreaked havoc on Assam streets

A person was killed and houses destroyed by a herd of wild elephants in a tea estate in Sonitpur district of Assam on Monday, a forest official said.

Tezpur: A person was killed and houses destroyed by a herd of wild elephants in a tea estate in Sonitpur district of Assam on Monday, a forest official said.

The herd of wild elephants came out from the Kaziranga National Park in search of food and entered Monabari Tea Estate under Behali police station this morning and a person was trampled to death when he came in front of the herd, Divisional Forest Officer (Sonitpur East) Sivasish Das said.

The herd also damaged four houses in Nankebasti No 6 line in the garden.

The dead has been identified as 38-year old Mahavir Bhorsagar.

The herd had come out in search of food as the Park has been inundated with flood water.

The forest employees later pushed back the herd towards the Park.

Das said that two persons have been killed by wild elephants in East Sonitpur division this year.
