J&K cop caught taking bribe red-handed, officer suspended as video goes viral

Srinagar: A traffic policeman in Jammu and Kashmir was caught taking bribe red-handed but what has astounded the social media was this amateur video.

Captured by an onlooker in Kashmir, the video went viral soon after it was posted on the social media. The video already has nearly 10,000 likes.

The one-minute video was posted by multiple news platforms in Kashmir alone on Thursday.

The video shows the cop signals the driver to pay a bribe in order to avoid paying a fine for wearing a Pheran, a traditional Kashmiri cloak, while driving.

However, the driver has been heard questioning the policeman, claiming he has the necessary documents.

"Who told you to wear a pheran? I will photograph it and send it to the judge along with the challan.

“I will tell him (judge) that he (driver) is driving an LP (long platform) truck wearing a pheran. Is it justified?" the officer is heard warning the driver.

If one goes by the rule book, there is no law against truck drivers wearing the pheran while driving in the state.

Hinting the driver to pay a bribe, the officer said, "We have friendship with you (drivers). Why should we fine you?".

The officer finally lets the driver go after he hands him a currency note.

Though the exact location of the incident could not be ascertained in the video, however, a senior officer said the erring cop has been identified and placed under suspension, NDTV reported.

A probe has also been ordered into the allegations against the officer.

A similar incident had happened in Hyderabad where a traffic cop was sacked after the victim posted the video on the traffic police's Facebook page.
