New Delhi: Australia captain Steve Smith on Sunday produced a batting master-class to destroy New Zealand bowlers in the first ODI match at Sydney Cricket Ground.

Smith, 27, his a career best ODI score of 164 off 157 balls with the help of 14 fours and four sixes to help Australia set a 325-run target against the Kiwis.

He reached hundred off 120 balls, which was slowest of the 23 hundreds scored by Australians in the last three years. But the skipper went hyperdrive, scoring the next 64 off just 37 balls.

Smith also tried playing Indian limited overs' skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni's famous 'helicopter shot', but ended up with disastrous result.

Ricky Ponting also scored 164, against South Africa at Johannesburg in 2006.

It was Smith's seventh ODI hundred, and in 73 innings, the skipper has scored 2808 runs.
