NIA arrests close aide of ULFA chief Paresh Barua

A senior trained cadre of ULFA(I), Gagan Hazarika alias Joydeep Cheleng, was remanded in NIA custody after he was produced in a special court.

New Delhi: A senior commander of banned militant organisation ULFA was on Friday arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

A senior trained cadre of ULFA(I), Gagan Hazarika alias Joydeep Cheleng, who was earlier arrested by Assam Police, was remanded in NIA custody after he was produced in a special court.

He was produced before a special NIA court in Guwahati from the Sivasagar District Jail on production warrant and taken into custody for six days, a press release issued by the NIA said.

"His arrest is likely to throw light on the activities of the senior leadership of the ULFA including Chairman Mukul Hazarika and Commander-in-Chief Paresh Barua since he was closely associated with them during their visit/stay at camps of ULFA located in Myanmar," it said.
