The Central Railway in India has had its schedule thrown off track because of the actions of someone that authorities are calling a “serial pooper.”

The pooper has been smearing feces on compartment walls, poles and even on seats. Commuters from Kasara and Titwala have been complaining about finding poop on the trains and their demands for clean compartments have created delays.

"There's crap everywhere inside the compartment -- it's disgusting," said a commuter.

"When commuters boarded an 8.16 am local for CST at Kasara, they found poop smeared on seats in two first-class coaches, one of which was a ladies compartment," said Rajesh Ghanghav, the vice-president of a passengers' association. "A railway cleaner boarded the train at Atgaon, but it was not possible to simply wipe the crap off the seats."

The Central Railway dealt with a similar problem in August.

Two services were delayed on Thursday because of unclean compartments, leading frustrated passengers to storm the station master's office at Titwala.

"They were so upset that we feared that they would assault the station master," said a station official. "The problem came to light two to three days ago, but we don't have machines and other equipment to clean the compartments. Normal cleaners refused to do the job."

Central Railway administrators are trying to deal with the problem.

"There have been delays of 10 to 20 minutes as trains halt at three to four stations for cleaning,” said a senior Central Railway official. “We have ordered better patrolling around sidings at Kasara, Titwala and a few other stations.”
