The public sector Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) is all set to walk off with the controversial South Kadi field even as the private sector contenders, the Tatas and the Essar group, continue to squabble over it. Backtracking on its earlier judgement, the expert committee has now placed both Tata Petrodyne and Essar below ONGC, say sources. The committee is of the view that the production profile projected by ONGC for development of South Kadi would yield the highest benefit to the Government.

Trade gap narrows during April-July

A negative growth in non-oil imports has pushed down the country’s trade deficit by 2.41 per cent during April-July 1996 as compared to the corresponding period the previous year. The trade deficit for the period was $1,082 millions as against $1,525 millions, showed data released by the Commerce Ministry this evening. Significantly, the figures show a slowdown in imports and a decline in trade deficit despite a 41.96 per cent growth in oil imports during the period. A press note issued by the Ministry said oil imports during April-July 1996 were $3,009.57 millions as against $2.119 millions during the corresponding period the previous year.

Motorola phone parts to be sold in India

Accessories for Motorola cellular phones are to be sold officially in India from September 1. The Chairman and Managing Director of J. V. Electronics Private Ltd, Mr. Om Wadhwa, told Business Line that Motorola had decided to appoint his company as the official seller of cellular phone accessories including batteries, transformers, car kits, boxes and bags. “These items are to be imported from the Motorola facility in the US initially,” Mr. Wadhwa said.
