Mukesh Trivedi, a Mumbai-based delivery boy for one of biggest online retail chains, has been standing outside banks for two days. Despite his employer having deposited his salary five days in advance, he has not been able to withdraw any money.

“There is only so much you can do with digital platforms. I have downloaded wallets and have also opened an online bank account but I still need cash,” said Trivedi standing outside a bank branch in Thane. While demonetisation has been challenging, the eve of pay day is turning out to be a nightmare for many.

The twitterati were seen expressing their worries over the long queues at banks and ATMs, wondering how to withdraw their hard earned money on pay day.

“Salary rush at the #banks have started. @HDFC_Bank MG Road the #queue went right out of the bank. #DeMonetisation,” read one of the tweets from a Bengaluru-based Twitter user Mahesh Senthi.

The sentiments were echoed across the country. Social media was full of pictures of long queues at ATMs.

Others who expect their salary to be credited on the 1st, seemed worried not just about long queues but also the non-functional ATMs.

“It will be #SalaryDay tomorrow, and Sultanpur New Delhi ATM #OutOfCash since a week,” read a tweet from a graphics designer in Delhi.

Meanwhile, fearing unrest and possible backlash from irate customers, bankers across the country have asked for special protection for their staff.
