The CPI(M)’s Politburo, at its meet in Delhi, is learnt to have recommended to the Kerala party unit to create a position in the LDF government with Cabinet rank for senior leader VS Achuthanandan, popularly known as ‘VS’.
The 92-year-old former Chief Minister, who had a key role in getting the LDF voted to power in the State, is likely to be appointed as an advisor to the government with the privileges of a Cabinet minister. VS, who had been the Leader of Opposition during the previous UDF tenure, left his government bungalow in Thiruvananthapuram last week and moved into a rented house.
CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechurty told reporters in Delhi that it was up to the Kerala Cabinet to decide on a post for VS. He noted that the Cabinet had already begun the process.
In gratitude for his help in the polls, and not insisting on being made CM, VS had reportedly been offered a senior position in the government as well as in the party.
His handing of a note to Yechury last week at the swearing-in of the Pinarayi Vijayan government had kicked off a controversy.
The note, caught by a TV camera, mentioned three posts: advisor to the government with Cabinet rank, chairman of the LDF committee; and membership in the CPI(M) State secretariat.
Yechury had later confirmed that such a note had been received — but who wrote it was unclear.
