A police sub-inspector (PSI) was injured when an angry mob threw stones and forced shops to close down in Diamond City of Surat where a chopped head of a calf was found at a busy crossing on Monday morning.
As mob fury and slogan-shouting inflamed religious sentiments further, police had to burst over 30 teargas shells and resort to lathi charge to disperse the angry mob and control the situation. Around 50 rioters, including some Bajrang Dal activists, were taken into preventive detention as they allegedly set on fire a couple of meat-selling shops.
In view of the tense situation, various markets observed an undeclared bandh as shopkeepers pulled down shutters soon after opening their establishments.
Police said the trouble began when some people found a chopped head of a calf at Maharana Pratap Chowk in Godadara area. “We had to burst teargas shells and resort to lathi charge to bring the situation under control,” said Satish Sharma, Police Commissioner.
Police also conducted a flag-march in the riot affected area. A PSI of Limbayat Police Station was injured during the trouble. Police has launched an investigation into the case.
