The Congress has said that boycotting the SAARC summit, which is to be held in Pakistan in November, is not a good idea to isolate the neighbouring country.

The principal Opposition party said the region was facing a number of issues such as poverty, inequality and terrorism, and SAARC remained the only platform available to discuss such matters.

Party spokesperson Manish Tewari asked the Centre to explore ways to hold the summit without Pakistan. He said 18 summits have already been held and no pattern was followed on the venue of the summit. “Is scrapping the SAARC summit the answer? There appears to be randomness to these summits. Could India have not had a summit minus Pakistan?” Tewari asked.

He said it had been 10 days since the attack in Uri and Narendra Modi government is still scrambling for a coherent reply. “Government responses in the past ten days have oscillated from the incoherent to ridiculous. When Modi was in Opposition, he made many blusterous comments,” Tewari said.

He said Modi never reflected on how to deal with issues of national security. “The government said that it is planning to review the Indus Water Treaty. What does that even mean? It would take five to ten years to build hydel projects. Is this the kind of response that the people are looking for? Will the RSS and BJP workers make a human dam to deny Pakistan water?” he asked.
