Former Union Minister and senior advocate Salman Khurshid said the Reserve Bank of India (RBI)’s reputation was at stake for not being communicative on concerns relating to the currency ban.

“...the kind of autonomy the RBI has always maintained seems badly affected and shaken now. ...this (demonetisation) is their decision. They must defend it,” he said at the Congress Party Office here.

“If RBI is confident that they have taken correct decisions they must come forward and explain. We may lose confidence in the government because of political reasons, but we must not lose faith in the RBI,” he added.

“Our position is that demonetisation is not good for the economy. We are determined to fight this battle to the end. The Supreme Court will hear the matter in January. Some Congress Party lawyers — Kapil Sibal, P Chidambaram, myself and others — will fight and establish the facts stating that what has been done is illegal and unlawful,” he said.

He also stated that Congress party leaders and workers would hold protests against demonetisation in the district headquarters of the state from next week.
