The Karnataka government is planning to provide foodgrains through the public distribution system to cancer patients, people having renal problems, and HIV-infected people, according to Minister for Food and Civil Supplies UT Khader.
Addressing presspersons in Mangaluru last weekend, Khader said there is a need to provide quality food at subsidised rates to these persons.
People suffering from cancer and kidney ailments have to spend a lot on medicines. Considering this, he is thinking of bringing such patients under the below poverty line (BPL) category to issue ration cards to them.
A survey is being conducted to estimate the number of patients in need of foodgrains at subsidised rate. After completing the survey, a decision will be taken to supply foodgrains at subsidised rates through the public distribution system, he said.
For the implementation of the scheme, the Karnataka government may seek the help of Centre.
Stating that some people are illegally possessing ration cards meant for BPL families, he said the government would reward those who provide information on illegal card holders.
Khader said that people can dial the dedicated line – 1967 -- to inform the department on issues related to public distribution system and substandard foodgrains.
