Fruit growers should adopt the model of milk cooperative societies to prosper, according to DC Chowta, a progressive farmer from Kasaragod district of Kerala.
Speaking at the inauguration of the ‘fruits mela’ as part of Vasanthotsava celebrations at Dr Shivarama Karantha Pilikula Nisargadhama in Mangaluru on Saturday, he said dairy farming made rapid strides after the country adopted the cooperative model.
With this model, even a farmer with one cow can become the member of the milk cooperative society. This cooperative structure helps in procuring, processing and marketing milk in the country.
Stating that farmers resort to distress sale when the prices of fruits go down, he said the milk cooperative model should be adopted for procuring, processing and marketing fruits.
Speaking on the occasion, Kamalakshi Rajanna, Chairperson of Karnataka State Mango Development and Marketing Corporation, said the State expects to export around 15,000 tonnes of mango to various countries in the current season.
The corporation has entered into an agreement with a private company in Malur to conduct various quality tests to meet the requirements of the international customers, she said.
Karnataka, which stands third in production, produces around 14 lakh tonnes of mango annually. Varieties produced in the State include Alphonso, Banganpalli, Mallika and Totapuri, she added.
