‘Centre’s response to Uri weak’

The Congress has asked the Centre to convene a special session of Parliament to discuss national security in the wake of the Uri terror attacks.

Terming the Centre’s response to Uri attacks as “weak”, the principal Opposition party said the Centre should adopt a multi-pronged strategy to isolate Pakistan diplomatically and economically.

Party spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi said Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s to the terror attack on an Army base in Kashmir’s Uri, made in Kozhikode, was “worrisome.”

“India is looking weak, having failed to deliver meaty blows to Pakistan. The people of India want concrete actions against the Pakistani rogue State. As far as India is concerned, political and administrative accountability of the highest offices have to be also fixed in the context of those responsible for security,” Singhvi said.

He the Congress believes that extreme situation demanded extreme decisions. “Uri and Pathankot have together taken a toll on India not seen in 20-22 years,” he added.

“By now, Pakistan should already have been declared a terrorist State. There should be a special session of Parliament to discuss our security situation and to declare Pakistan a terrorist State. We also demand near-absolute economic sanctions against Pakistan,” Singhvi said.

The Congress demanded that the Centre “considerably scale down” activities of Pakistan’s High Commission in Delhi and the Indian High Commission in Islamabad.

The Rajya Sabha member said the Centre failed to diplomatically isolate Pakistan. Citing Russia’s joint military exercise with Russia, Singhvi said the Prime Minister could not convince even Russia, considered as India’s best friend. “Modi’s speech demonstrates strategic ambiguity. We don’t want this to lead to strategic confusion, making India a laughing stock. The only responses thus far are rhetoric and jumla s,” he added.
