Over one-third of the mission target of constructing individual household toilets in urban areas under Swachh Bharat Mission has been met, a statement from the Ministry of Urban Development said on Monday.

“During the two years of Swachh Bharat Mission, 22,97,389 individual household toilets have so far been constructed in urban areas of the country as against the five-year mission target of 66,42,221 such toilets to be built by 2019,” the statement said, adding that with 35 per cent of mission target being met in two years i.e. 40 per cent of the mission duration, construction of toilets meant for ending open defecation in urban areas is broadly on course.

Urban Development Minister M.Venkaiah Naidu on Monday reviewed the progress of the mission in urban areas.

PERFORMERS

Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh have met the mission targets three years ahead in September this year. Gujarat has achieved the target of 4,06,388 toilets and Andhra Pradesh has built 1,93,426 toilets in urban areas, the statement said.

Among other states, Kerala has achieved 68 per cent of the mission target, Chhattisgarh 61 per cent, Madhya Pradesh 46 per cent and Tamil Nadu 43 per cent.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra has built 33 per cent of the targeted individual household toilets, Uttar Pradesh 31 per cent, Karnataka 31 per cent and Jharkhand 30 per cent.

Telangana has met 28 per cent of the mission target followed by West Bengal 23 per cent, Puducherry 22 per cent, Punjab 19 per cent.

POOR PROGRESS

Manipur has met only 9 per cent of the target, Bihar 7.40 per cent, Uttarakhand 7 per cent, Odisha 4.40 per cent, Mizoram 3.34 per cent and Arunachal Pradesh 1.60 per cent.

The mission was launched on October 2, 2014, and had envisaged construction of 1.04 crore individual household toilets in urban areas based on 2011 Census. Subsequently, taking in to consideration the construction of toilets during 2011-14, mission target in this regard has been revised to 66,42,221 toilets based on the assessment of States/UTs.
