The Centre on Thursday refuted the Congress’ allegation that it had tried to arm-twist States into reducing funds under employment guarantee scheme MGNREGA. The Rural Affairs Ministry said the message passed on through Whatsapp was only informal communication by a Joint Secretary, and that it “does not override detailed written communication to States to implement MGNREGA in letter and spirit”. “The informal communication by the Joint Secretary is regretted and it is not the view of the government. It however, did not influence the provision of work on demand in States,” the Ministry said in a statement.
The Centre said there was an overall 21 per cent increase in person-days generation in the current financial year, which, the Ministry said, was the highest in the last six years.
