Parliamentarians on Saturday paid rich tributes to Bharat Ratna Chakravarthi Rajagopalachari, popularly known as ‘Rajaji’, on his birth anniversary.

On the occasion, a booklet containing the profile of Rajaji was brought out in English and Hindi by the Lok Sabha Secretariat and was presented to those who attended the function, an official release said.

Rajaji’s portrait was unveiled in the Central Hall of Parliament House on August 21, 1978, by the then President N. Sanjiva Reddy.

Rajagopalachari was born in 1878 in Thorapalli, Madras Presidency of British India (now Tamil Nadu). A lawyer, freedom fighter and writer, he was the first and last Indian Governor-General of India after Lord Mountbatten left India in 1948.

One of the prominent leaders of the Indian National Congress during the pre-Independence era, Rajaji held many important positions such as Premier of Madras Presidency, Governor of West Bengal, Minister of Home Affairs and Chief Minister of Madras State, and is most remembered for the work he did in Madras as Chief Minister from 1952–54.

On Saturday, Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, P.J. Kurien, and former Deputy Prime Minister and Chairperson, Ethics Committee, L.K. Advani, paid floral tributes at the portrait of Rajagopalachari in the Central Hall of Parliament.
