The Centre for Indian Trade Unions (CITU) has sought the support of the general public and the labour force in the country for the September 2 general strike call given by 11 central trade unions in protest against the Modi Government's labour policies.

Swadesh Dev Roye, the national secretary of the CITU, said here on Monday  the Modi Government was seeking to do away with labour laws enacted after great struggles by the working class in the name of attracting FDI into the country. "We have to protect these laws to save the interests of the working class. It is very clear the NDA Government would take care of only the corporates," he said.

He said the Government was saying that it would clear "the jungle of labour laws" and enact a single law, but, in fact, it would lead to the law of the jungle.

He was also critical of the Modi Government's ‘Make in India’ campaign. He said RBI Governor Rajan had rightly pointed out that it should be ‘Make for India’ and not ‘Make in India’. The purchasing power of Indians should increase and there should be a domestic market for goods and services produced in the country. There should be employment-led growth and not the kind of growth envisaged by the Modi Government which would only help the corporates.

He also criticised the Government for seeking to mop up Rs 69,000 crore through disinvestment in PSUs such as the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant and HPCL for bridging the budget deficit.
