The rupee was trading strong at 67.03 against the US dollar in the evening session on increased selling of the American currency by exporters and banks.

Forex dealers said foreign fund inflows also supported the domestic unit but a weak domestic equity market restricted the gains.

The domestic unit opened strong at 67.08 against the previous close of 67.11 per dollar at the Interbank Foreign Exchange market today.

It hovered in a range of 67.11 and 67.01 before quoting at 67.03, up 8 paise at 4.30 pm local time.

Meanwhile, the BSE index fell 224.03 points or 0.8 per cent to 27,835.91, as investors booked profits a day before US Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen's speech that is expected to provide clues on outlook for US interest rates.
