Strong domestic demand pushed up pepper prices on Friday. Supply of new pepper from Wayanad in Kerala and Coorg in Karnataka is expected late this month. At the same time, Vietnam is closed and will open only after 15th. Thus, there is tightness in supply, they said. 130 tonnes of pepper were traded at ₹625-630 a kg.

Spot pepper shot up by ₹500 a quintal to ₹61,500 (ungarbled) and ₹64,500 (garbled). February and March contracts also increased by ₹1,000 to ₹64,000 and ₹62,500. Export prices were at $9,600 a tonne c&f for Europe and $9,850 for the US.
